A potential key role for radionuclide imaging in the prediction and prevention of sudden arrhythmic cardiac death.

چکیده
Despite enormous progress over the past few decades in reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease, the ability to identify patients at risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains a challenge. SCD accounts for about 350,000 deaths annually in the United States (1). Most SCDs are from ventricular arrhythmias—ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation (VT/VF)— and the means to effectively identify patients before such an event, although improving, are still limited. The question is whether a simple, noninvasive test such as radionuclide imaging with

‘ICD in Primary Prevention: Potential Role of Sympathetic Nerve Imaging’
Patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 35% are at increased risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD). These patients are likely to receive an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), effective in reducing the occurrence of SCD in primary prevention. The decision to use an ICD in CHF, according to the current guidelines, is based on New York Hea...
متن کاملPrediction of sudden cardiac death: appraisal of the studies and methods assessing the risk of sudden arrhythmic death.
Since the recognition of the high incidence of cardiac arrest as the mechanism of sudden cardiac death (SCD), medical scientists and clinicians have sought methods to predict and prevent these events. Significant progress has already been made in the prediction and prevention of life-threatening arrhythmias during the last decade. This progress is highlighted by the outcomes of 4 recently publi...

Sudden cardiac death in sport, although rare, but is a tragic event, attracting the media and public attention. Sport and exercise may act as a trigger for sudden cardiac death. Risk of sudden death in young athletes with cardiovascular disease is 2.5 times more frequent than non-athlete individuals. More than 90% of cases of sudden death occur during or immediately after training or competitio...
متن کاملThe utility of ADMIRE-HF risk score in predicting serious arrhythmic events in heart failure patients: incremental prognostic benefit of cardiac 123I-mIBG scintigraphy.
BACKGROUND A minority of heart failure (HF) patients who undergo implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) receive device therapy. Whether the addition of mIBG scintigraphy to conventional markers of arrhythmic risk can provide incremental risk stratification in HF patients has not been investigated. METHODS We identified 77...
متن کاملSocial and psychosocial influences on sudden cardiac death, ventricular arrhythmia and cardiac autonomic function.
The importance of a better understanding of arrhythmic risk lies, in public health terms, in the prevention of sudden cardiac death. Approximately 50% of all coronary deaths are sudden, occurring within 1 h of the onset of symptoms. Most cases of sudden cardiac death have coronary artery disease present at autopsy, although in approximately 50% this will not have been clinically apparent prior ...
